Fantasy Fest is over

Fantasy Fest in Key West is over. I am now home for a while, haven't blogged because of a confluence of factors, alcohol, parties, late nights but most importantly I was having trouble seeing, the world was blurry. I resolved the problem this morning, in time to split the driving in the rainstorms, bad timing that. The problem appears to have been operator error, maybe aided and abetted by the aforementioned factors but operator error is the proximate cause. I think I put the damn contacts in backward. This morning I put in two new ones, from the same lot as the last, and can again see with only minor astigmatic impairment.

I downloaded my pictures, snapshots really, to my primary computer tonight and will try to have some posts on events of the past week starting tomorrow. I am also processing some for friends, these are pictures they are in and will remain private unless they choose to share them.

Processing photos on an iPad

There is a definite difference in quality between iPad processing and desktop processing. I much prefer the larger screen and more capable software of the desktop, this takes twice as long and I won't really know how they look to the viewer 'til I get back to mine. That being said, it's still cool to be able to do this on a unit I can hold in one hand.

trying to see if I can figure out how to use "Blogsy" so I can blog from my iPad when I'm traveling. This may incentivize me to restart the blog.

Since I last posted, I kind of lost my will to photograph and post. Had a serious illness in the family which has resolved favorably about 95% over a period of months. Was traveling a lot; Cancun, California, Key West, St. Martin, Wisconsin and didn't enter any juried shows or shoot any nudes. Trying to change that situation now. Will still be traveling but maybe will be able to process and post from the iPad. Will try not to take any photos with it though, it has a reallllly crappy camera.

Getting a quote on putting A/C into my garage/studio dual use conversion. I need A/C if I don't want to shoot models looking either spritzed or hosed as South Florida garages are really warm in the summer. Going with an independent unit as this will be part-time and I will need a relatively fast cooldown, more than I could get hooked up to my central A/C.

Ground Hog Day

OK, so it's not Ground Hog Day and it's not a Ground Hog. It is as close as I could come to a Ground Hog and, considering I broke a tooth 2 days ago and just spent 2 hours in a dentists chair to have my first ever crown fitted, I'm feeling pretty damn good about giving my one or two viewers any kind of rodent at all.

This little feller was in a Northern California city park last summer. I shot him while waiting for the events to start at a "Dog Picnic". It's a very long story which I am not going to relate here, but just let it be said that, after the "Guests of Honor" arrived (about 20 Shiba Inus) this guy did not have a restful afternoon, although the entrances to his living quarters were substantially enlarged.

Got my cheesecake yesterday, first time I ever had Peppermint Cheesecake. It wasn't that bad but I think I like plain, New York style, better. Glad I had it though, a unique combination.

Found out while doing this one that selecting B&W in Lightroom only affects the original file, not the adjustment brush. I'd already colored her eye and it stayed colored when I switched to B&W, surprised the hell out of me.

Under the Knife

Surgery seems to be successful and I am walking around. Time to get back to some photography....before the wife has me back to her "Honey Do" list.

Have started on the project to make my garage into a part-time studio. My garage is a 3 car with 10 foot ceiling. The doors are 7 feet in height and the cheap ass contractor only put the rails for the doors high enough for the doors, so they were at about 8 feet. I had them raised to the ceiling and, looking at it now, it's something I should have done studio or not. Next items are to get an estimate on a small A/C unit for the garage (about 9 months of the year it's too hot to be in there long), and then cabinets and floor painting - meaning I have to clean all the crap out of it.

The plan is to have a space I can convert from garage to studio in about 2 hours by pulling cars out, mopping the floor, turning on the A/C and then putting up lights and backdrop. Conversion back hopefully a little shorter time. Most of it, with the exception of the A/C, would be done to have a finished garage anyway so it's really a garage finishing project. Up 'til now I've used the living room which is not as big and has the additional disadvantage of the aforementioned wife not wanting her furniture moved all over.

Well, I did say I would not add to this blog every day. Right after my last post we went out of ythe country for the New Year's holiday. Had a fantastic time in St. Martin. I do not post my travel schedules ahead of time however, not a wise thing on the web.

After we came home I was involved in FotoFusion in West palm Beach, Florida. A wonderful event with much photographic eduction and even a couple of nude shooting workshops but a very tiring experience, although one I highly recommend. I feel it should be subtitled "Photographic Education through Sleep Deprivation" however.

I am slated for surgery next week, probably won't be too mobile so will be back to silence on the blog.

Photo above was taken with a Canon G9 near dark, using a wall behind me for a support since it was a fairly long exposure.

This was the sight as we turned the final curve on I-95 before our exit. We immediately figured we would be late to pick up our friends. Didn't take much brilliance for that. My VAL (Voice Activated Lightstand) picked up a camera and started documenting the scene. The fire truck passed us before we got to the origin of the smoke.

The Cancun Airport Curse.......

Spent Thanksgiving week in a resort outside of Cancun. Had a real good time (all inclusive including drinks). I gained 3 pounds in 8 days, the weather was great, read a lot of books, evenings in the hot tub, partied with my honey until the wee hours....some nights anyway.

A weird thing happened on the way home though. We were in the Cancun airport, all checked in, and my wife had a medical concern of the "do we go to a Mexican Emergency Room or catch our plane " variety. Had the same concerns in the same airport for an entirely different medical problem in March, on our way back from that Cancun trip. Eventually decided to fly in both cases and got medical attention the following day (phone call to specialist after arriving home who said it was all right to wait). Prognosis is good so no problem there. Previous problem has also been favorably resolved. My question is, does Cancun like my wife so much that it doesn't want her to go home? Is she just cursed? Should we go back (we are planning to)?

Didn't take too many photos while there, the Internet service sucked big time, and working photos on a laptop is far from my favorite thing to do on "vacation", especially with all-inclusive alcohol available, so I didn't post. I also don't think it is the most brilliant idea in the world to advertise my absence, even if the house does have burglar alarms and attentive neighbors. I have included 4 photos for my attentive reader(s), one of which has a nude somewhere within it, suitably anonymous since I have no release and didn't even realize she was in there until reviewing my photos for this post. Fantasy Fest Sunday - After the Party

Went out early in the morning on Sunday, just not early enough. The streets were already clean. A previous year I had seen the cleanup operation.....front loaders and dump trucks to clean up Duval Street. They've been doing this for 25 years and have it down to an art. The pictures below were taken walking up and down Duval after the cleanup, the streets are wet because they were washed down.

Fantasy Fest Saturday - THE Parade

Saturday is the conclusion of the fantasy Fest activities with the big parade down Duval Street, the whole length of the island. This year the duration for our float - #49 - was 4 hours to go about 1.5 miles. Lots of stopping. We left the "marshaling area" at 7:30 PM, we arrived at our restaurant for after parade dinner and libation at about 11:30. The first group of photos is from the pre-parade activities in the area of our float.

My mind is still too boggled over the election results and the future that is promised by the current crop, on both sides of the aisle. Al-Qaida must be laughing their collective barbaric asses off as the Conservatives pat themselves on the back and the rest of us get our genitals patted in the TSA lines.

Fantasy Fest Friday - Masquerade Parade

Friday afternoon the "locals" parade is held. No floats, no "krewes", just lots of people walking from the cemetary and stopping at tables set up in the street with free drinks. This was my first year, it won't be my last - it was a lot of fun. As the name implies, costumes are required.

Fantasy Fest Thursday - Toga Night

Things are pretty quiet before the evening parties start, for some strange reason. The police are at their most visible then. After dark people start crowding into the various venues.

Just tried to upload images from Fantasy Fest Thursday night and got "server rejected" on all of them....including the cop on horseback. I know other people who have had problems with some faceless person complaining about their blog content and GOOGLE removing or restricting it, but this would be some kind of record.

Computer working again....I broke LightRoom

The photographers among my small audience recognize the name "LightRoom" (LR) as a program for "developing" digital images, it also catalogs them and allows a great deal of printing and publication actions. It is the digital replacement for a darkroom, although not as well equipped a "darkroom" as Photoshop provides, adequate for 95% of what I normally need to do. Well I broke my LR catalog. That meant I could not access the photos I had worked on for the "Fantasy Fest Thursday" post. It is now being rebuilt - 93,000+ images just on my C drive.so it's taking a while.

I went out and shot the surf at sunset today, while my computer crunched. I used a Variable Neutral Density filter to get long exposure times to blur the 10 to 15 foot breaking waves. Of course LR is still crunching so I can't download my pictures. To revert to pirate mode...."ARRRRRGH". I will wait to post this until I can post 1 or more of those images also.

LR finished, at least with the C drive so I'm posting the blurred surf images, will post more Fantasy Fest later.

The party starts at Capt. Tony's on Tuesdays. By the end of it everyone knows what imitation Scotsmen wear under their kilts. Bodypainting, costumes, the entire theme is supposed to go with Plaid. There are significant variations seen. The amazing thing is that the crowd is generally polite, orderly, camera mad and somewhat naked.

Or is playing a Pirate a fetish too? At any rate, Sunday of Fantasy Fest is Pirate Night at Capt. Tony's bar in Key West. Most of the festival goers have yet to arrive but the party still takes place mostly on the streets.

This is definitely an adult party. playing dress up, or down, is encouraged, as I'm sure you noticed in the background of the second snapshot. Lots of sentences consisting mainly of the word (?) "ARRRRRGH" are also heard - especially as the night wears on and more people are able to get to the bar. I was saying it as I tried to get into my costume from two years (and 15 pounds) before.

Monday night is the unofficial fetish party called "Kelly's Kinky Karnival". People must be in fetish wear of some kind to get in the door and a demo area is set up on the second floor. The pictures below have been edited so as not to reveal any identities, at least one person whose picture was identifiable on the internet in a previous year was fired from her job as a result, even though her activity was entirely legal and no mention or indication of her employer was made. America is still largely an intolerant and self-righteous country - what's truly scary is that it is still better than most of the rest of the world in that regard.

Now that my computer woes are in temporary (as all things computer are, at least woes) abeyance, I am able to turn my attention to more important things - such as telling what tales I may of the activities at our local (a 5 hour drive is local here) Halloween festivities. I speak of Fantasy Fest in Key West, Florida, USA.

The photo above shows just a part of the decorations at the B&B we stay at. The proprietor's wife spent three days, with the help of the cleaning staff (one guy.....it's only 12 rooms after all), putting up the decorations. It was worth it, the house took first place in the decoration contest in the commercial category, for the second year in a row, even with the fog machine out of.....fog when the judges drove up. At the end of the week she left for her day job (out of town), leaving husband (and aforesaid cleaning staff) to remove and store the decorations.Such is married life.

The celebration itself is a week long bacchanal of costumes (or lack thereof), food, music, parades, bodypaint (see also "lack of costumes" mentioned previously), crowds, et al (al. includes drink). About 60,000 people come into town for the event, crowding into less than a mile along one street for the most part. The finale is a parade on Saturday night which took 4 hours to finish, throwing beads, taking pictures and kissing girls the whole 1.5 miles. In between the start and finish of the week are multiple parties every night, mostly at drinking establishments for some reason. Don't think this actually encourages imbibing of spirits however, it cannot for the partys, and thus the bars, are so crowded that it is difficult to get enough to drink, let alone too much.

Tomorrows post, assuming I survive the night, will be a discussion of the Sunday and Monday partys. Pirate theme Sunday turned to a Fetish/BDSM theme on Monday.

Finally got at least the minimum acceptable configuration, I think the last 5% is going to be a bitch (apologies to all the female canines out there). Will now download the pictures I took at Fantasy Fest and post a few. Still have to get my USB 3.0 drive running and then rearrange my files on the drives..... and clean up my office; parts, tools etc scattered everywhere.

Been meeting some nice people here but the parties are crazy. So far have survived the Pirate Party, Kelly's Kinky Karnival, Plaid Night, and Red Night. They started to block off Duval Street (the main drag through Olde Town) in sections tonight. Too many people for the sidewalks. Costumes and bodypainted....bodies...everywhere. Have yet to catch up on photo processing. Do not need to catch up on alcohol processing however.

The Bed & Breakfast I stay at won the Halloween Decoration award for the 2nd year in a row, complete with fog machine. The Happy Hour parties on the front verandah are a real hoot with half the people already in costume.

Leaving the Country.....

Heading for the "Conch Republic", AKA Key West, Florida USA. They once attempted to secede due to the Border Patrol or Immigration Service (not sure which, pre Department of Homeland InSecurity) setting up a checkpoint on the only road out of the Keys demanding proof of citizenship to get to the mainland. The courts spanked them (Border Patrol, not Key West) for that then but they could probably do it with impunity under the Robert's court.

Fantasy Fest is already underway (google it) but will continue until Saturday 10/30. Body painting is the main artistic endeavor while getting drunk is the most popular activity in general. Below are two bodypainting examples from previous years, I will attempt to avoid inflicting examples of the most popular activity on my small audience.

Went to a party at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. The picture above was taken with a Canon G9 in the ambient light at ISO1600, very noisy. The model was painted by a very talented young artist named Georgette Pressler. She has a Bachelor in Fine Arts and has chosen the human body as her preferred media.

This is how I feel about my computer right now, a bottomless pit. The USB 2.0 connection is so slow that I will be leaving town before it has finished backing up the system. I really don't want to reload all the programs from disk though so am sticking to it. On a laptop now and just downloaded the 30 day trial version of Lightroom 3 so I can at least work (and post) on some pictures.

The election lieing is proceeding apace here in Florida. The Republican candidate for governor, whose company (he founded it and was CEO) was fined 1.7 BILLION dollars for Medicare fraud, is accusing his opponent of being in charge of a 30 Million dollar fraud. The Republicans are blaming the Obama administration for the national debt problem when $9.2 Trillion was run up by Reagan and the 2 Bushes, and most of the rest was still being paid off for WWII. ZFact.com has some fascinating statistics looking at the debt record of the various presidencies. The Democrats seem to be afraid to stick up for themselves, just rolling over and letting the opposition set the message.

The first picture was taken looking up a ladder inside an abandoned satellite tracking facility in the Bahamas, still gives me a touch of vertigo though.

The second picture was of a delightful young lady who was being body painted in a store window in Key West, Florida, during the annual Fantasy Fest celebration a couple of years ago. This years celebration starts this weekend, I hope to have some interesting street photos for my small audience.

F***ing Computers

Well I have all the parts but my backup program seems to be having problems, maybe because of my basic problem, maybe not. I'm going to shut the whole thing down, disconnect all external drives except for the one I want to use as a backup, restart, kill all the autoloading programs and try to back up the system. Then crack the case, replace my 2 x 0.5 TB drives, striped for "performance" under RAID 1, with 2 x 1 TB drives, go to RAID 0 and reload my system....assuming I get it backed up. Going to add 4 more USB 2.0 ports, 2 USB 3.0 ports and redo my cabling at the same time. Wish me luck or pray to the deity of your choice, if that is your wish, for my success.

[Took the photo offline after I was informed that it clicked through at hi res, will put it back in lo res when my computer system can handle it....not soon unfortunately]

On the computer front

Parts are beginning to come in for my computer repair (hoped for anyway). I should be able to open the case on Tuesday and start swapping drives and installing a couple new cards. Going to take the opportunity to straighten out the cable mess behind the desk too. The problem seems to be occurring less right now but I'm not counting chickens just yet.

Had a guest for a few hours

At the behest of my wife, we did a transport from Ft. Lauderdale to North of Orlando for the Shiba Inu Rescue organization. Took a wonderful dog - a Shiba Inu named Foxy - who had been terribly neglected and abused, from one foster home to another. He also spent 6 hours at our house, it was nice having a dog around again.

Computer problems

Just when I decide to get into the blogging thing I have a fairly serious computer problem. The computer is set up with RAID striping, it writes data across 2 drives to increase performance. The NVIDIA RAID controller is reporting that it is having trouble accessing one drive. The drive reports back healthy. This sucks. Everything stops until it accesses that drive.

Have to buy bigger drives and reload everything without the "striping". Have backed up my data but would really like to back up everything, programs included. I'm going to try to add USB 3.0 while I have the case open.

We'll see when I can get back on here.
